The A1 receptors inhibit adenylate cyclase while the type A2 receptors stimulate activity. Each adenosine receptor has a specific pattern of ligand binding and a unique tissue distribution. The human ADORA1 gene consists of 6 exons of which the last 2 are part of the coding region. A study of mRNAs from a range of human tissues revealed the existence of alternative splicing within the 5' UTR. Transcripts containing exons 4, 5 and 6 were found in all tissues while a distinct transcript containing exons 3, 5 and 6 was seen only in certain tissues. No transcript contained both exons 3 and 4.
